Winter at the Farm

“What good is the warmth of summer without the cold of winter to give it sweetness” - John Steinbeck

Ahhh, winter. Where the earth takes her well-earned rest and deep breath, and encourages us to do the same.

At Dark Horse, winter is used for regeneration of our soul and spirit after giving all we have in the months where the sun shines, the rain nourishes, and the bees begin their magical process of pollination. We sharpen our tools, clean out the drying sheds, dust off the thrasher and choose who will be the lucky new variety to add to our family of lavender.

Here in Eastern Washington, we are blessed with some pretty magnificent scenery. Bucolic rolling and seemingly endless wheatfields, towering pine cathedrals, and in winter - shimmering blankets of snow that reflect with the intensity of diamonds in the sun. But all ying has its yang - and with that beauty comes frost damage to tend to, mud season to deal with and a lot to clean up!

The next few months we’ll be working on new product development, new technology, new engineering designs, and many other exhilarating projects!

So in anticipation of the eternal spring to come, I encourage you all to use these last months of winter to curl up in front of a fire, drink your lavender tea, read that book that you have been putting off, take a walk where you live and try to be present - notice things you’ve passed so many times before, but just now see. This quiet world will soon give way to the burst of life regenerated, and we’ll start this dance once more.

Peace to you all - Sherrie
