About Dark Horse Lavender & Herb Farm
I’ve always had a deep love for anything involving fresh dirt - whether it was gardening with my southern mother, or building imaginary roads, bridges, dams - you name it - with my brother in the backyard of our Connecticut shoreline home. To me, the smell of soil, and the infinite possibilities of what it can produce, provided me hours of endless fascination.
After years away from this passion (working for the man in corporate America), I came back to the land. Eastern Washington has an oddly perfect climate for lavender due to its low humidity, though winters can be brutal.
The first year we planted 300 plants near an old turn of the century milking shed that my husband moved from its original location. Sam did this while I was out of town to keep me from worrying about the horrific news story of a farmer being run over by logs and his own tractor. Oh the ingenuity and chutzpah of a man on a mission.
My love of herbs grew from these most amazing plants - the perfect combination of flower and food. Herbs are easy to grow, incredibly resilient, most of the time perennials here in zone 5b, and underutilized in the area of personal health and well being. We have the most amazing spot with sun, plenty of nutrients, and coming soon - a beautiful greenhouse to get these babies started. Stay tuned for pictures!
The farm itself is named after the first horse I ever owned, who is still with us! His name is Anyday, because, well, when you call him, he’ll come to you any day. Half Tennessee Walker half Arab, he’s a black solid mix of strength, grace and attitude. Perfect.
